Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This pair of Gustavian style stools originates from Sweden in 1890 and is constructed from painted wood, gilt wood, and fabric. Each stool has a round upholstered top covered in off-white fabric, resting upon a cream and gold painted frame with carved scroll legs, ornate square corner blocks, and central arched stretchers finished with detailed carvings and claw feet. The frames show a distressed painted finish with authentic traces of gold leaf showing through the cream surface. Measuring 43 cm high, 47 cm wide, and 47 cm deep, these compact circular seats fit neatly in a bedroom at the foot of the bed or function as extra seating in a living room, dressing area, or hallway.

FAQs

Swedish painted stools from the Gustavian era reflect French Neoclassical design adapted for Scandinavian interiors. They feature carved woodwork, chalky painted surfaces, and proportioned silhouettes created to maximise natural light in Northern homes.

These pieces were crafted from native timber such as pine and birch using mortise and tenon joinery. Surfaces were treated with chalk paint, distemper, or gilt accents, and completed with woven linen or cotton upholstery.

Authentic items display natural wear to the painted surface along high-touch areas, historic timber shrinkage, and traditional joinery. The undersides often reveal raw, hand-sawn timber and multiple historical paint layers.

Positioning a pair of painted stools at the foot of a bed, beneath a console table, or alongside a hearth creates balanced visual interest. The soft paint palette integrates into modern neutral colour schemes while providing occasional seating.

Dust the carved frame using a dry, soft-bristled brush to prevent surface abrasion. Clean the fabric with a vacuum attachment, and keep the stools away from direct heat sources and excessive humidity to prevent timber movement and flaking paint.
