These nineteenth-century Swedish Gustavian style stools represent a pair of beech footstools made by Johan Bykan in Malmo around 1860. Each piece is finished in cream paint with parcel gilded trim and upholstered in cream patterned fabric. The design includes fluted legs, rosette aprons, and leaf-carved capitals. Visible details encompass turned legs tapering down to small round feet, decorative moulding along the seat edges, and stamp marks from the maker. Measuring 36 cm high, 42 cm wide, and 46 cm deep, they function practically as low seats or footstools in a bedroom, fitting well placed at the foot of the bed or alongside a dressing table.

Originating in Sweden during the late 18th century under King Gustav III, Gustavian style adapts French Neoclassicism into restrained forms often featuring pale painted finishes, carved fluting, and gilded details.

Traditional pieces are crafted from solid hardwoods such as beech or pine, finished with painted or parcel-gilded details, and fitted with upholstered tops using natural woven textiles.

Authentic items show evidence of hand-carved joinery, mortise-and-tenon construction, multi-layered painted or gilded surface wear, and wooden seat frames under the upholstery.

Position a pair at the foot of a bed, beneath a console table, or flanking a fireplace to provide occasional seating while adding Neoclassical architectural symmetry.

Dust gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or soft bristle brush, avoiding water, chemical solvents, or abrasive cleaners that can damage gold leaf and historical paint finishes.
