This pair of Swedish stools dates from 1890 and is executed in a Gustavian style with off-white painted wooden frames. Each piece has a rectangular upholstered seat covered in pale green and cream striped fabric. The structural design incorporates tapering fluted legs, carved rosette corner blocks, and a detailed guilloche frieze along the seat rail. Subtle distressing to the off-white paint finish reveals the underlying timber in areas, showing authentic age and wear. The compact proportions measure 46 cm high, 41 cm wide, and 41 cm deep. These versatile decorative items function effectively in various domestic settings today. Placed at the foot of the bed, they provide a convenient surface for clothing or a comfortable spot to sit while dressing. Alternatively, they work well positioned in a hallway as a functional perching seat or used as occasional seating in a living room arrangement. The pale green fabric palette coordinates easily with both neutral and pastel interior schemes.

FAQs

Originating in late eighteenth-century Sweden under King Gustav III, Gustavian furniture adapts French Neoclassical design using muted paint finishes, symmetrical carving, and restrained classical motifs suited to Nordic interiors.

Historically crafted from native softwoods such as pine or hardwoods like birch, these stools feature hand-carved details, pegged joinery, layered chalk or milk paint finishes, and traditional webbed upholstery.

Genuine period examples display hand-cut joinery, historical paint layers showing natural wear at contact points, carved rosettes or fluting, and timber showing subtle shrinkage or hand-planing marks.

Place a pair of stools at the foot of a bed, flank a fireplace hearth, or position them beneath a hall console table to introduce classical structure, soft neutral tones, and versatile accent seating.

Clean gently using a dry, soft microfibre cloth without harsh chemical cleaners, maintain stable indoor humidity to prevent wood movement, and protect original painted surfaces from direct sunlight.
