A fusee is a cone-shaped pulley used in antique clocks to equalise the declining power of the mainspring as it unwinds, ensuring more accurate timekeeping.

These clocks typically feature solid timber cases such as rosewood, mahogany, or oak, often adorned with brass bezels, painted dials, and decorative inlays like mother-of-pearl.

Authentic pieces usually feature hand-painted dials, high-quality mechanical movements with fusee cones, substantial wooden cases with period construction joints, and maker signatures on the dial or movement plate.

Mount the clock as a focal point on a neutral wall to let the timber grain and inlay stand out, pairing it with minimalist furnishings to create a balanced contrast between old and new.

Keep the clock away from direct sunlight, extreme temperature fluctuations, and moisture. Professional servicing every few years is recommended to clean and oil the mechanical movement.
