This Edwardian tallboy combines a cupboard on a five-drawer chest, executed in warm brown rosewood with satinwood marquetry, foliate arabesque inlay, urn motifs, and polished brass hardware. The upper section comprises a stepped cornice with satinwood dogtooth moulding, a line-inlaid frieze with a central circular floral medallion, and a pair of cabinet doors featuring moulded frames, a central brass drop pendant escutcheon, and inlaid panels depicting flowers in vases, cornucopias, and urns surrounded by scrolls and ribbons. The doors open via brass hardware to an interior fitted with a single shelf, flanked by stiles inlaid with trailing harebells. Below this sits a lower chest containing five graduated drawers with moulded edges, each fronted by a pair of brass drop handles with shell-stamped backplates, surrounded by delicate foliate marquetry and central floral bouquets. The whole stands upon a solid plinth base with fine line-inlaid corner stiles. Measuring 184 cm high, 92 cm wide, and 40 cm deep, this substantial yet elegant piece provides generous vertical storage for a bedroom, dressing room, or hallway. The intricate satinwood contrast against the rich timber ground creates a striking focal point suited to traditional English Country House interiors. It accommodates folded linens, garments, or miscellaneous home accessories while serving as a commanding decorative cabinet.

FAQs

Edwardian inlaid rosewood furniture, popular in the early 20th century, often draws inspiration from 18th-century Neo-Classical and Sheraton designs. It features fine marquetry, floral arabesques, and urn motifs crafted from contrasting light hardwoods inlaid into rich rosewood background veneers.

These pieces typically feature solid timber construction veneered with rich rosewood and intricate marquetry using woods such as satinwood and boxwood. Original drawer handles and fittings are generally cast in brass.

Authentic Edwardian marquetry features precisely cut, hand-fitted wood veneers, often with faint shading details on the inlay. Drawer construction from this period demonstrates hand-cut dovetail joints and solid oak or pine drawer linings.

A decorative tallboy serves as an anchor piece in a bedroom, dressing room, or hallway. Pairing dark rosewood with neutral walls and contemporary lighting creates an engaging contrast between historical craftsmanship and modern design.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent timber movement and veneer lifting. Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality natural beeswax polish once or twice a year, buffing gently along the grain.
