Description

Mahogany Pad Top Bracket Clock by Langford of Southampton.

The silvered, engraved dial features both Roman and Arabic numerals, with very fine blued steel hands, a strike/silent option within the break arch and a brass hand for the concentric date.

The 8-day, twin fusee striking movement with anchor escapement strikes the hours to a single bell situated above the movement via a rack and snail striking system. The clock has substantial plates bound together by 5 knopped pillars with the back plate being nicely engraved around the boarder. The mahogany case is beautifully made with fish scale frets in both sides, glazed doors to the front and back of the clock with a brass bound pad on top of the case with carrying handle fixed above.

Serviced and guaranteed for 3 years.

Bracket clocks originated in the 17th century as portable spring-driven timepieces designed to sit on a bracket, shelf, or table, featuring high-grade mechanical movements.

Traditional construction involved solid timber cases such as mahogany, oak, or ebonised wood, often enhanced with brass mounts, glass panels, and enamelled or painted metal dials.

Authentication involves examining the hand-engraved backplate, the quality of timber grain, the original escapement mechanism, and maker signatures corresponding to historical records.

Placing the clock on a prominent surface such as a mantelpiece, sideboard, or bookcase allows its classical proportions and timber tones to create a focal point.

Preservation requires professional mechanical servicing every few years, keeping the movement away from direct sunlight, and maintaining stable indoor humidity levels to protect the wood.
