This Victorian bedside cabinet shows Louis XVI Revival style influence, constructed from solid mahogany with a warm brown timber colour and applied ormolu and brass hardware. The piece presents a rectangular top over a single frieze drawer with a central ring pull, positioned above a cupboard door centred with a decorative ormolu laurel wreath mount and brass ring handle. Beaded bronze mouldings frame the timber panels, while decorative gilt bronze mounts embellish the upper corners and the square tapered legs. The practical furniture measures 75 cm high, 51 cm wide and 42 cm deep. Placed in a home today, it functions well as a bedside table or side cabinet in a bedroom or living area.

FAQs

The Louis XVI style is defined by Neoclassical restraint, symmetrical geometry, and inspiration from antiquity. Common features include straight panel lines, square tapered legs, beaded mouldings, and classical bronze ormolu mounts such as wreaths, ribbons, and acanthus leaves.

Cabinets of this era are typically constructed using dense hardwoods like mahogany or fruitwood, often finished with flame veneers. Decorative detailing is achieved through cast gilt bronze or brass fittings, known as ormolu, alongside fine oak or pine internal drawer linings.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, hand-planed back panels, and cast metal mounts secured with original threaded bolts or steel screws. The oxidisation of the timber and natural patina on the gilt brass fittings also indicate historical age.

Position a dark mahogany cabinet against light neutral walls, such as muted beige or warm white, to highlight its dark timber tones. Pair the piece with modern ceramic lighting or subtle brass accessories to bridge classic design with contemporary interiors.

Dust timber regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish twice yearly along the grain. Metal mounts should be cleaned using a dry soft brush to remove dust without applying chemical brass polishes that could damage surrounding wood finishes.
