Carriage clocks originated in the 19th century as portable timepieces designed for travellers, officers, and the wealthy, incorporating robust mechanical movements to withstand motion.

They typically feature a brass or gilt-metal framework housing bevelled glass panels, driven by spring-powered mechanical movements with escapements like the lever or duplex.

Authenticity is determined by examining the hand-finished mechanical movement, serial numbers, enamel dial construction, and the presence of expected wear and tear on the brass and glass components.

Placing the clock on a prominent surface such as a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or office desk allows it to serve as an understated focal point while blending historical charm with contemporary decor.

These timepieces require professional mechanical servicing every few years, careful handling to protect the delicate escapement, and gentle cleaning of the exterior surfaces with a dry, lint-free cloth.
