FAQs

Painted corner cupboards gained popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries as a practical solution for utilising awkward room angles while displaying valued household items or storing provisions.

These pieces were typically constructed from native hardwoods or softwoods such as pine, oak, or deal, joined using traditional hand-cut dovetails and pegged joints before receiving hand-applied gesso and oil paint finishes.

Authenticity is determined by examining hand-forged iron or brass hinges, historical pigment analysis, tool marks indicative of period woodworking techniques, and natural craquelure in the paint surface.

Positioning the piece within an unused room angle allows it to function as a striking focal point, contrasting effectively against neutral contemporary walls while providing functional display space.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading, and cleaning only with a dry, soft microfibre cloth without harsh chemical polishes.
