18th Century Whisky Ships Dram Glass C1750

18th century
For Sale by Exhibit Antiques
Description

Description

A very fine and unusually rare mid 18th century Georgian whisky dram glass, dating to c1750.

It has a flared round funnel bowl with a substantial solid section at the base, sitting on a short, thick stem above an exceptionally wide and heavy conical foot with a rough pontil.

Although relatively simple in design, this particular form is considerably less common than many other 18th century dram glasses.

Glasses of this type are sometimes described as ship's dram glasses, their low, squat proportions and unusually broad feet providing greater stability than taller, more conventional drinking glasses.

However, there is no reason to suggest that their use was restricted to ships. They would have been equally practical in taverns, inns and private households, where a sturdy drinking glass was particularly useful.

An exceptional surviving example, approximately 275 years old, with a generous capacity that will comfortably accommodate two or more modern 25ml whisky measures.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE GEORGIAN ERA:
Rough snapped pontil scar to base: hand-blown manufacture before pontil polishing became standard.
Concentrated wear ring on foot rim: decades of natural movement across flat surfaces.
Dark-tinted lead glass metal with scattered seeds: eighteenth-century glasshouse batch mix.
Heavy conical foot wider than the bowl: deliberate design for stability.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Georgian dram glass dates to the mid eighteenth century during the period of King George II. Made from clear lead glass, the vessel stands 7.7cm high with a 5.5cm rim diameter, a 6.3cm foot diameter, and a weight of 143g. It features a flared round funnel bowl with a substantial solid section at the base, sitting on a short, thick stem above an exceptionally wide and heavy conical foot with a rough pontil. The clear glass construction reveals a smooth transparent finish with clean polished surfaces. Originally designed for whisky, low proportions and a broad foot provide practical stability. It fits well on a sideboard top in a dining room, study or gentleman's library for display or use with spirits. The glass sits alongside small books with brown bindings and dark spines, a ceramic figurine with blue and red details, and a reflective white surface.

A ships dram glass is a compact, heavy-based spirit vessel designed during the eighteenth century with a low centre of gravity to prevent tipping aboard seafaring vessels.

Eighteenth-century dram glasses were typically hand-blown from English lead glass, featuring thick solid bases, snapped pontil marks, and minor natural inclusions characteristic of period production.

Authentic Georgian pieces feature hand-blown irregularities, a rough or snapped pontil scar beneath a heavy foot rim, natural grey-blue undertones from lead content, and subtle base wear.

Display dram glasses on a timber bar cart, within an illuminated glazed cabinet, or atop a silver tray in a study to showcase period glassmaking techniques.

Hand wash gently in tepid water using mild dish soap, avoiding dishwashers, sudden temperature changes, and abrasive cloths that cause clouding or surface scratching.
