FAQs

A court cupboard is a form of two-tiered wooden storage furniture originating in the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Historically used in dining spaces to display plate and store food or linens, it features an upper open shelf or canopy section supported by turned balusters above an enclosed lower cupboard base.

Traditional court cupboards were constructed primarily from solid oak timber using mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden dowels or pegs. Decorative details were executed through hand-carved relief panels, turned columns, and wrought iron hardware.

Authentic period pieces show signs of age such as uneven hand-sawn timber, pegged joinery rather than modern screws, and natural oxidation within the interior grain. Original pieces often display hand-carved motifs with subtle variations in depth and proportion, alongside historic wear around handles and bases.

A court cupboard can serve as a focal statement piece in a hallway, dining room, or living space. Positioned against crisp neutral walls or dark botanical wallpaper, the piece provides architectural structure and visual balance when paired with contemporary ceramic lighting or understated accessories.

Dust regularly using a dry, lint-free microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the wood timber. Avoid placing the cupboard in direct sunlight or adjacent to active heat sources to prevent cracking and timber shrinkage.
