Pair Georgian Emerald Blue Wine Glasses C1820

18th century
For Sale by Exhibit Antiques
Description

Description

A fine pair of Georgian emerald blue wine glasses dating to c1820.

They have round funnel bowls above plain stems with central angular knops and conical feet with snapped pontils.

Coloured drinking glasses became increasingly fashionable during the late Georgian and Regency periods, with rich greens, blues and amethyst shades providing a striking contrast to the clear glass which had dominated much of the 18th century. By the early 19th century improvements in glassmaking and colouring techniques allowed these strong colours to be produced more consistently, and coloured glasses became an increasingly decorative feature of the dining table.

Date & Origin

England, c1820. Period of King George IV.

Condition

Excellent. No chips, cracks or restoration.

Dimensions

Height: 12.3 cm

This pair of Georgian wine glasses dates to c1820 during the period of King George IV and follows the grand Regency style. Formed from hand-blown lead glass, the matching vessels display a deep teal blue colour with smooth polished surfaces, round funnel bowls, and knopped stems rising from plain sections above circular conical feet. The visible details include prominent central angular mouldings on the stems, crisp rim profiles, and flared bases resting on a flat surface. Each glass stands 12.3 cm in height with a rim diameter of 6.1 cm and a foot diameter of 6.3 cm. Coloured drinking glasses emerged as fashionable dining table accessories during the late Georgian and Regency eras as glassmaking techniques advanced. These glasses suit a traditional dining setting, adding rich colour to a table service, or serving as display pieces atop a sideboard top in a living room or dining room. The durable lead glass construction makes them practical for serving wine on special occasions, bringing period character and striking colour to an interior scheme.

Georgian coloured glassware encompasses drinking vessels and decorative items produced in Britain between 1714 and 1830. Makers incorporated metallic oxides, such as iron or cobalt, into the glass batch to create rich teal, green, and blue hues.

19th-century English wine glasses were primarily fashioned from hand-blown lead glass. The addition of lead oxide increased light refraction and gave the glass distinct weight and clarity.

Authentic Georgian stemware exhibits hand-crafting traits including a snapped or ground pontil mark under the foot, minor air bubbles within the glass matrix, natural base wear, and slight dimensional variations resulting from free-blowing.

Coloured antique glassware can be displayed on a sideboard top, curated inside a glass-fronted cabinet, or integrated into contemporary dining settings as functional tableware accents.

Hand wash antique lead glass stemware individually in lukewarm water using mild liquid detergent. Avoid dishwashers and thermal shock, drying immediately with a lint-free soft cloth.
