This 19th Century French carriage clock exhibits a brass gorge case with convex and concave mouldings, rectangular bevelled glass panels, and a hinged top carrying handle with curved corners. The white enamel dial displays black Roman numerals, blued steel moon hands, five-minute outer markers, and a subsidiary alarm dial at the lower section. Accompanied by a matching winding key and a red textured travel case with a dark rectangular viewing window, the ensemble presents a polished metallic finish paired with warm red leather-like tones. Height 14 cm with the handle down, width 9.5 cm, and depth 8 cm. Suitable for placement on a mantelpiece within a gentleman's library or study, this piece operates as a functional timekeeper driven by an eight-day duration mechanism. The internal structure includes a lever escapement visible through the large bevelled glass on top, alongside a striking and repeating system for hours and half-hours. The design integrates traditional horological components intended for portable use during the Victorian period, complete with an original fitted box to protect the brass framework and glass panels during transport.

A carriage clock is a small, portable spring-driven timepiece designed for travel, developed in France during the early nineteenth century with a carrying handle and rectangular brass casing.

Traditional carriage clocks feature solid brass or bronze cases, bevelled glass panels, spring-driven mechanical movements, and white enamel dials with Roman numerals.

Authentic French carriage clocks typically feature maker marks or serial numbers stamped on the rear movement plate, high-grade glass panels, and a platform escapement visible through a glass aperture on the top.

Position a carriage clock on a fireplace mantelpiece, bookshelf, or executive desk alongside leather-bound volumes and understated brass accoutrements.

Wind the mechanism regularly using the correct winding key, keep the casing in a temperature-stable environment to prevent tarnishing, and have the movement lubricated by a professional horologist every three to five years.
