Georgian Tall Glass Oil Lamp with Applied Handle

19th century
Description

This is a Georgian, glass oil lamp (sometimes but erroneously called a lacemaker's lamp) with an applied handle dating from the second half of the 18th century. Similar lamps can be seen in Keith Kelsall's book - "The Open Flame Lamp".

The lamp is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot consistent with some 200 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the base of the foot.

The lamp has an ovoid-shaped bowl reservoir measuring 7.5 cm (3 inches) in diameter. The bowl sits on a hollow baluster stem with a shoulder knop. There is a "drip tray" disk below the reservoir. with a turned over rim The stem ends in a collar and a conical, folded foot that measures 12.8 cm (5.1 inches) in diameter. The lamp is 24.5 cm (9.8 inches) in height. The applied handle was first attached to the top of the stem and then finished off at the bottom of the stem with a curlicue. The handle also has a well-worked thumb rest. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. The stem of the lamp is a little cloudy from manufacture, probably due to some water vapour getting trapped in the stem.

It weighs 380 g. (~ 13 oz.).

This clear blown lead crystal oil lamp dates from the nineteenth century in the Georgian style. The piece comprises a bulbous top reservoir above a drip tray collar, a hollow baluster stem with a shoulder knop, an applied loop handle with a well-worked thumb rest and a curlicue terminal, and a broad circular foot. The hand-blown glass displays a rough pontil mark on the base, age-related wear to the rim of the foot, and a cloudy stem showing manufacturing water vapour inclusion. The object measures 24.5 cm high, 12.8 cm wide, and 7.5 cm deep. Display this decorative lamp on a mantelpiece in a gentleman's library or study interior scheme. The traditional profile integrates easily with period collections or classic table displays. Position away from high-traffic zones to protect the delicate hand-blown structure while retaining historical character in a living space.

A Georgian glass oil lamp is an 18th or early 19th-century lighting vessel crafted from hand-blown glass, designed to hold whale oil or vegetable oil for ambient indoor illumination.

These lamps were individually hand-blown by glassmakers, typically comprising a bulbous glass reservoir, a drip tray collar, a baluster stem, and a loop handle applied while the glass remained hot.

Authentic period pieces exhibit a snapped or polished pontil mark on the base, subtle air bubbles within the glass matrix, and slight asymmetry from manual free-blowing processes.

Position the lamp on a mantelpiece, console table, or open shelving alongside contemporary ceramics to contrast historic glasscraft with modern minimalist surfaces.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and mild washing-up liquid, avoiding harsh chemicals, abrasive sponges, or sudden thermal changes that might induce cracking.
