This George III mahogany bedside cabinet originates from the late 18th century and exemplifies the Georgian style. The piece is rendered in a dark brown timber finish with rich patination, showing a slight bow on the single panelled cupboard door. Other visible details include a shaped tray top gallery with cut-out handholds on the sides, right-hand door hinges, straight square legs with inside chamfers, and a small round wooden door knob. The cabinet measures 74 cm high, 38 cm wide, and 39 cm deep. Practical and versatile, this item suits placement beside a bed or sofa to hold small reading lamps, books, or personal items. It fits naturally into traditional bedrooms, hallways, or living spaces within an English Country House interior scheme, adding period character and convenient bedside storage without taking up excessive floor space.

FAQs

A Georgian bedside cabinet, historically referred to as a pot cupboard or night commode, was developed during the 18th century as a functional piece of bedroom furniture designed to store night-time utilities while providing a surface for lighting or personal items.

These cabinets were primarily constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers, valued for their durability and warm timber grain, and frequently featured galleried tray tops with cut-out handles, dovetailed joinery, and single panelled doors.

Authentic 18th-century pieces typically feature hand-cut dovetail joints, oak or pine secondary timber for internal linings, hand-planed back panels, and early iron or brass hardware.

A Georgian cabinet functions effectively as an occasional side table in a contemporary living room, a compact telephone stand in a hallway, or a nightstand alongside a modern bed.

Dust the timber surfaces regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, keeping the cabinet away from direct sunlight and radiator heat to prevent timber shrinkage or fading.
