This French Renaissance Revival earthenware vase dates from 1890 and stands 20 cm high and 13 cm wide. The piece exhibits a white tin glaze finish with hand-painted polychrome decoration in shades of blue, ochre, yellow, and green. The design incorporates grotesque scrollwork motifs, a central caryatid figure, birds, masks, and geometric borders around the rim and pedestal foot. The ceramic body shows light surface marks consistent with age, alongside bright and vibrant colours. Suitable for display on a sideboard top, the vase functions as a decorative accent in a traditional interior. It works well styled independently or paired with dried botanical stems in a living room, dining room, or entrance hall. The sturdy pedestal foot provides stability for surface placement.

Founded in 1821 in the Loire Valley, the Gien manufactory became famous for producing fine tin-glazed earthenware inspired by historic European and Oriental ceramic traditions. During the nineteenth century, Gien gained international acclaim for its Renaissance Revival patterns featuring intricate grotesque motifs and vivid enamel palette.

Gien faience is crafted from earthenware clay coated with an opaque white tin glaze. Artisans hand-painted decorative enamel patterns onto the unfired or fired glaze before a final firing process fused the pigments to create a smooth, glossy surface.

Authentic pieces feature impressed or painted manufacturer marks on the base, such as the castle crest or stamped Gien lettering corresponding to specific production periods. Examination of fine hand-painted brushwork, natural surface crazing, and the specific density of the earthenware body also assists in verification.

Gien faience pieces serve as focal points on dark wood sideboards, marble mantelpieces, or structured open shelving. The detailed classical artwork complements traditional French Chateau styling while offering an artistic contrast against minimalist modern backdrops.

Dust ceramics regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to maintain surface finish. Avoid immersing antique faience in water or using abrasive chemical cleaners, as moisture can penetrate fine hairline cracks in the tin glaze and damage the porous underlying earthenware.
