This pine storage trunk from the rustic country style period of 1890 presents a dark grey painted finish applied over a solid pine construction. The rectangular box stands on a plinth base and includes a hinged flat lid that opens to reveal a natural timber interior alongside iron drop side handles fitted to the exterior. Visible characteristics include the repainted exterior surface, exposed interior grain, and metal hardware. Measuring 42 cm high by 90 cm wide and 44 cm deep, the chest offers practical storage capacity. In contemporary interiors, this piece functions well at the foot of the bed for holding spare linen, blankets, or pillows, or serves as a functional storage chest in a hallway or living room. The neutral dark tone and straightforward utilitarian design suit traditional, rustic, and country farmhouse decorative schemes.

FAQs

Painted pine storage trunks were essential utilitarian furniture items in 19th-century households, used to store linens, clothing, and personal belongings before built-in wardrobes became widespread.

These trunks were constructed using pine timber joined with dovetail or rebate joints, fitted with hand-forged iron hinges and side handles, and finished with protective paint.

Look for hand-turned iron hardware, irregular saw marks on the interior boards, original lock plates, and natural wear patterns along the paintwork on high-touch edges.

A dark painted trunk works effectively at the foot of a bed, as an occasional low table, or positioned in a hallway to provide grounded storage.

Dust the surface with a soft, dry cloth and apply a light coating of clear beeswax occasionally to protect the painted timber without dampening the original finish.
