This traditional Indian antique almirah damchiya teak dowry chest storage cupboard is a substantial storage cabinet originating from the year 1900. Built from solid teak with iron hardware, the piece presents a heavily distressed green painted finish showing rich historic patination, worn multi-layered pigment, and aged wooden textures. The construction incorporates two levels of cabinet space secured behind double panelled doors, complemented by raised wooden mouldings, dark metal hinges, and fasteners. Detailing includes prominent turned finials surmounting the upper corners, small wooden wheels supporting the base, and visible signs of age and wear throughout the timber structure. The dimensions measure 73 cm in depth, 150 cm in height, and 73.7 cm in width. Such a rustic statement piece suits utility as a distinctive standalone storage cupboard within a hallway, bedroom, or living space.

FAQs

An almirah is a traditional Indian cabinet or cupboard used for storage, while a damchiya is historically a carved wooden chest used to store a brides dowry items.

These cabinets are commonly constructed from dense hardwoods such as teak and fitted with hand-forged iron straps, hinges, latches, and turned wooden finials.

Authentic examples display hand-carved details, layered patinated paint finishes, hand-forged iron fittings, and traditional mortise and tenon joinery rather than modern screws.

A distressed painted cupboard functions as an accent storage unit in a hallway, bedroom, or living space, pairing well with neutral plaster walls and contemporary furnishings.

Clean the timber with a soft dry cloth and avoid abrasive chemicals or excessive moisture to preserve the original patinated surface finish.
