This 19th Century French bookcase is constructed from solid mahogany with amboyna veneers in a rich brown tone, complemented by pleated cream fabric door panels. The exterior displays intricate floral marquetry inlay across the lower door panels and the top frieze, accompanied by crisply cast gilt metal or ormolu mounts at the top corners of the doors. A pair of panelled doors features a central hanging tassel handle and encloses a shelved interior with adjustable shelves, secured by a lock with a supplied key. The upright structure rests upon turned bun feet at the base and incorporates decorative carved mouldings and fluted pilasters flanking the front. Measuring 169 cm high, 115 cm wide, and 43 cm deep, this piece provides practical storage for books or display items. Suitable for placement in a living room, study, or home office, the furniture piece integrates well into both traditional and classic interior schemes. The polished timber finish highlights the wood grain patterns while maintaining a clean, well-presented surface ready for daily use. The combination of inlaid botanical motifs, brass decorative elements, and fabric-backed door panels offers a refined aesthetic suited to domestic storage needs. The proportions allow it to stand against a wall without dominating smaller spaces while providing accessible shelving behind lockable doors.

Nineteenth-century French bookcases, often referred to as bibliotheques, are defined by high-quality cabinetry featuring rich timber veneers like mahogany or amboyna, fine marquetry, and architectural proportions influenced by Empire and Neoclassical designs.

Cabinetmakers favoured solid mahogany frames faced with burl veneers such as amboyna, accented by brass or gilded bronze (ormolu) mounts, hand-cut dovetail joints, and decorative fabric-lined doors.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut joinery, gilded metal mounts with subtle casting variations, period-appropriate lock mechanisms, and genuine wood patina along unvarnished backboards.

Position the piece as a statement focal point in a study, dining space, or reception room to create visual contrast against neutral walls and minimalist modern furnishings.

Maintain a stable indoor humidity level, keep the cabinet away from direct sunlight and radiators, and apply a light coat of natural beeswax polish annually along the grain.
