This George IV bedside cabinet originates from the 19th century in the Grand Regency style, shaped as a compact standing night stand constructed from mahogany with a warm brown finish and visible figured grain across the top, door, and sides. The three-quarter gallery top surmounts a single cupboard door fitted with a small turned wooden knob, while the entire structure is raised on four slender, turned, and reeded tapered legs. The timber displays a polished surface with a mellow colour, showing patinated surfaces preserved through cleaning and waxing. Measuring 81 cm high, 41 cm wide, and 38 cm deep, this freestanding piece functions as a bedside table in a bedroom or as a small cabinet in a living space. It provides enclosed bedside storage while maintaining a compact footprint suited for placement beside a bed or sofa.

Originating in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, pot cupboards were designed to discreetly store a chamber pot beside the bed before indoor plumbing became commonplace. These pieces evolved into multifunctional bedside tables and storage cabinets during the Regency period.

Cabinets from this era were primarily constructed using high-density Cuban or Honduran mahogany, valued for its stability and rich grain. Features include hand-cut dovetail joints, reeded or reeded-turned legs, panelled cupboard doors, and oak or pine drawer linings.

Authentic pieces often exhibit precise proportions, finely turned reeded legs, high-grade timber, and occasional maker stamps on drawer tops or rear rails. Check for original brass hinges, aged interior patination, and hand-cut joinery consistent with early nineteenth-century techniques.

These versatile small cabinets serve effectively as bedside tables, sofa end tables, or occasional hallway storage. Placing a contemporary ceramic lamp or minimal glassware on top balances the historical timber with modern aesthetics.

Apply a high-grade beeswax polish twice a year using a soft lint-free cloth, buffing along the direction of the wood grain. Keep the cabinet away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage, veneer splitting, or fading of the original finish.
