Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 17TH CENTURY:
Pegged mortise-and-tenon joints: solid early joinery secured with hand-shaped wooden pegs.
Broad adzed horizontal backboards: timber shaped across the grain with early hand tools.
Wrought-iron butterfly hinges: hand-forged hardware fastened with rosehead nails.
Applied split-spindle turnings: decorative woodwork fashionable on Charles II furniture.
Druce and Company metal label: documented history in the London antique trade.

This small seventeenth-century Jacobean oak hutch or aumbry cupboard stands at 124 cm high, 106 cm wide, and 48 cm deep, making it a practical storage piece for a dining room, hallway, or living space. The timber exhibits a dark brown colour and a warm polished finish across its two-piece top, raised fielded panels, and original oak boarding. The cabinet displays hand-forged iron butterfly strap hinges, applied split turnings down the stiles, and a dentil moulding beneath the upper edge. The facade incorporates multiple panelled doors with keyhole escutcheons and vertical upright accents. The rustic farmhouse aesthetic suits traditional or period interiors where compact architectural cabinetry is required for everyday organisation. The sturdy wooden construction sits on straight upright feet, demonstrating period joinery techniques typical of Charles II craftsmanship.

A 17th century oak hutch is an early form of wooden storage cabinet produced during the Jacobean and Carolean periods in Britain and Northern Europe. Originally built to store food, bread, or household linens, these pieces featured solid joined oak frames, raised panels, and hand-forged iron fittings.

Furniture from this era was constructed using hand-riven oak with mortise and tenon joints held together by wooden pegs rather than metal screws or glue. Panels were fitted into grooved frames to allow the timber to expand and contract with environmental changes.

Authentic period pieces exhibit signs of hand-planing on untrimmed reverse surfaces, peg construction showing uneven wear, natural timber shrinkage across the grain, and original hand-forged iron hinges or latches.

A dark oak hutch functions well as a focal storage piece in an entryway, dining area, or living space. Positioning the piece against crisp neutral walls highlights the rich patina and geometric panel work without overwhelming contemporary schemes.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and radiator units to prevent excessive drying and cracking. Maintain the surface patina by applying a natural beeswax polish once or twice a year and dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth.
