Gothic Revival furniture draws inspiration from medieval architecture and design motifs, experiencing major revivals during the 19th century and early 20th century. It is characterised by architectural elements such as pointed arches, linenfold panelling, and heavy timber construction.

Traditional wardrobes from this era were primarily constructed from solid native timbers such as oak, walnut, and mahogany. Craftsmanship often involved traditional joinery techniques like mortise and tenon joints, hand-carved details, and wrought iron or brass hardware.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of age such as hand-cut joinery, timber shrinkage, period-appropriate hardware, and natural wear patterns on high-touch surfaces. Machine-cut screws, modern glues, and synthetic finishes typically indicate a later reproduction.

Pairing a dark, substantial wooden piece with neutral walls, minimalist lighting, and contemporary textiles creates a balanced scheme. The contrast between historical weight and clean, modern surroundings highlights the craftsmanship of the furniture.

Maintain antique timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking. Dust regularly with a dry cloth and occasionally apply a natural beeswax polish to nourish the wood without building up heavy chemical residues.
