Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 17TH CENTURY:
Hand-riven oak backboards secured in rebated framing: early vernacular joinery.
Pegged mortise and tenon construction throughout the frame: period cabinet work.
Geometric applied mouldings on the upper doors: typical 17th-century joinery.
Turned baluster uprights below the overhanging cornice: regional early format.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This seventeenth-century Welsh press cupboard exemplifies the vernacular style of its period, constructed from solid timber with a rich dark brown finish and original patination. The upper section comprises a central fixed panel flanked by two doors with geometric raised panels, secured by brass keyhole escutcheons and small wooden knobs. This upper stage is supported by turned balusters at the front corners, set beneath a deep, stepped, moulded cornice. The lower section features a two-door cabinet with fielded panels arranged in a grid pattern, fitted with a simple wooden knob and a brass lock plate. The structure stands on short block feet and displays natural surface wear consistent with age. Measuring 158 cm high, 134 cm wide, and 60 cm deep, this substantial piece provides generous storage capacity. It serves as a practical statement storage unit in a hallway, dining room, or living space, offering an authentic rustic farmhouse aesthetic for contemporary interiors.

A Welsh press cupboard, historically known as a cwtch press or court cupboard, is a two-sectioned storage piece originating from rural Wales in the 17th and 18th centuries. It typically features an upper recessed cupboard framed by turned columns above a larger enclosed lower cupboard used for storing textiles and linens.

These cupboards were predominantly crafted from locally sourced English or Welsh oak and assembled using mortise and tenon joints secured with wooden pegs. Decorative elements included hand-carved geometric panels, turned balusters, and iron or brass escutcheons.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-planed timber surfaces, irregular hand-cut wooden joinery pegs, natural timber shrinkage across wide backboards, and original keyhole escutcheons or iron hinge fittings. The interior surfaces should show an uneven, oxidised tone distinct from modern re-creations.

Position the cupboard as a central focal point in a hallway, dining room, or living space to add historical visual weight to modern neutral schemes. Pair the dark, rich oak tone with simple contemporary ceramics, linen soft furnishings, and clean architectural lines.

Maintain the timber by applying a small amount of clear beeswax paste once or twice a year to protect the surface and enhance the natural patina. Position the cabinet away from direct heat sources and radiators to prevent wood shrinkage and joint movement.
