Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An antique Old Sheffield plate three-bottle decanter cruet from the 1890 period brings Georgian style to a home. The piece consists of a silver-plated stand holding three clear cut-glass bottles with matching stoppers, displaying a silver and clear colour palette. The stand has a gadrooned border, a loop handle with foliate decoration, and cast scrolling feet, while the glass bottles show cut facets and star-cut patterned stoppers. The complete assembly measures 28 cm high, 25 cm wide, and 25 cm deep. In a contemporary home, the cruet serves as a decorative display on a sideboard top or dining room credenza, holding spirits or liqueurs for guests. The Sheffield plate finish exhibits good colour and condition, showing wear consistent with age and use through gentle patination on the metal surfaces.

FAQs

Old Sheffield Plate is a technique discovered in the mid-18th century where a sheet of copper is fused between two thin layers of sterling silver before being rolled into sheets and worked into objects.

These sets typically feature frames made from solid sterling silver or fused silver plate, paired with mouth-blown, hand-cut lead crystal or glass bottles and stopper fittings.

Authentic pieces usually display a faint seam line where silver foil was wrapped over exposed copper edges, show slight copper showing through high points of wear (bled silver), and often lack standard sterling hallmarks.

Place the set on a wooden sideboard, marble bar cart, or dining tray alongside modern glassware to create a textural contrast between antique metalwork and contemporary decor.

Clean the metal frame gently using a soft cloth and a specialised silver polish formulated for plated items, avoiding aggressive buffing. Wash the glass decanters by hand with warm soapy water, ensuring they are completely dry before inserting stoppers.
