This nineteenth-century French provincial buffet de corps is a two-tier oak game cupboard rendered in a warm brown timber. The upper section comprises three doors enclosing a shelved cupboard, highlighted by a central high-relief hunting scene carving depicting animals, flanked by panelled doors, turned pilasters, and topped with a spindled gallery rail with small finials. Below, two drawers fitted with metal drop handles sit above a two-door lower base decorated with geometric carved panels. The entire piece stands on small rounded feet and separates into two sections for transport. Measuring 198 cm high, 120 cm wide, and 50 cm deep, this practical antique storage cabinet fits naturally into a dining room, kitchen, or hallway as a statement sideboard for storing tableware, linens, or provisions while providing a decorative surface for display.

FAQs

A buffet de corps is a traditional French two-part cabinet featuring an upper cupboard resting upon a larger lower base. Originating in the 16th and 17th centuries, these pieces were manufactured across various French regions and commonly featured detailed relief carvings illustrating regional or hunting motifs.

Solid oak was the predominant timber used for constructing French game cupboards due to its durability and suitability for intricate hand carving. Other hardwoods such as walnut and chestnut were also utilised depending on the regional origin of the piece.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail or mortise-and-tenon joinery, original iron or brass hardware, and uneven hand-planed backing boards. High-relief carving detailing game, floral, or architectural elements reflects hand tools rather than modern machine milling.

Position the cabinet as a standalone focal piece against a neutral wall to highlight the dark wood and carved details. Contrast the dense, carved wood with modern minimalist ceramics or simple glass decorative items displayed nearby.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth and clean intricate carved areas with a soft-bristled brush. Apply a natural beeswax paste once or twice a year to preserve the timber patina and prevent the wood from drying out.
