Japanning is a European imitation of East Asian lacquerwork popular during the 17th and 18th centuries, characterised by raised metallic designs on a dark background.

These cases are typically constructed from pine or oak carcasses finished with multiple layers of resin varnish, chalk, and gold leaf detailing, housing a brass mechanical movement.

Authenticity is determined by examining the hand-carved woodwork, the ageing of the lacquer finish, the characteristics of the brass dial, and the integrity of the mechanical movement.

Position the clock against a neutral wall in a hallway or living space to let the intricate metallic motifs serve as a striking vertical focal point.

Keep the clock away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity sources, dusting gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth without applying chemical polishes.
