Description

This is an early Victorian, Scottish, engraved, mouth-blown, double series opaque twist stem wine glass, probably made in the Louth glassworks and dating from the middle of the 19th century, c1840.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot commensurate with some 180 years of use. It has a polished out pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has a trumpet-shaped bowl measuring 6 cm (2.4 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is engraved with a band of engraved oak leaves and acorns just under the rim and sits on a merise and a double series opaque twist stem consisting of two white enamel cords wound around a central lace twist. The stem leads to a conical foot that measures 7 cm (2.8 inches) in diameter. The glass is 15.3 cm (6.1 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration.

Lead glass weighing in at 110 g. (~ 4 oz.).

An opaque twist wine glass is a type of historical drinking vessel featuring a stem decorated with white or coloured enamel glass twists enclosed within a clear glass outer casing.

These glasses are crafted from lead crystal or flint glass, incorporating specially prepared opaque white enamel glass rods, known as latticinio, within the drawn stem.

Authentic pieces often exhibit pontil marks on the base, minor surface wear consistent with age, subtle manufacturing imperfections such as tiny air bubbles, and hand-etched detailing rather than modern machine engraving.

Antique stemware can be displayed within glass-fronted cabinets, used as accent pieces on open shelving, or styled on sideboards to add texture, history, and reflective elegance to a room.

Antique glass should be washed gently by hand in lukewarm water using mild detergent, avoiding harsh abrasives, ultrasonic cleaners, and sudden temperature changes to prevent cracking or scratching.
