Description

This is a Continental (these glasses are normally attributed to the Dutch but we believe this to be French), Georgian/Louis XVI wine glass dating from the second half of the 18th century. Three very similar glasses can be seen in Jacqueline Bellanger's book - "Verre d'usage et de prestige, France 1500-1800" on page 383.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows the age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot and the rim of the bowl consistent with 250+ years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has a rounded bucket-shaped bowl measuring 6.6 cm (2.6 inches) in diameter at the misshapen rim. The bowl is plain and sits on a six-sided pedestal stem and a conical, folded foot which measures 6.2 cm (2.5 inches) in diameter. The glass is 14 cm (5.6 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. The glass shows the early signs of crizzling (glass disease) which the French called the pink disease as the glasses take on a distinct pink hue when the crizzling is advanced.

French soda glass weighing in at 95 g. (~ 3 oz.).

Georgian and Continental stemware from the 18th and early 19th centuries is characterised by heavy lead or potash glass compositions, handblown techniques, and distinctive multi-series stems or plain tapered bowls suited for wines and cordials.

These pieces were typically crafted using free-blown or mould-blown glass methods, often utilising lead metal or local potash formulas, resulting in characteristic inclusions, pontil marks on the base, and slight irregularities inherent to period production.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the wear patterns on the foot rim, the presence of a snapped or ground pontil mark, tactile weight, subtle bubbles within the metal, and the overall thickness and shape consistent with historical manufacturing tolerances.

Antique stemware can be displayed within glass-fronted cabinets, utilised as tabletop accents on sideboards, or incorporated into curated dining settings to introduce historical texture and transparent forms to contemporary schemes.

Old glass requires gentle hand washing in lukewarm water with mild detergent, avoiding sudden temperature changes to prevent thermal shock, and storing securely on stable surfaces away from direct vibrations or stacking.
