Description

This is a Georgian, deceptive toastmaster's heavy baluster dram glass dating from the early part of the 18th century, c1725.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to both the rim of the bowl and to the rim of the foot commensurate with some 300 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has a funnel-shaped bowl measuring 5.2 cm (2.1 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl thickens as it descends to reduce the amount of liqour it can hold and sits on an inverted baluster stem containing an air tear and a conical, folded foot which measures 6.6 cm (2.6 inches) in diameter. The glass is 11.7 cm (4.7 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There are a couple of small unburst bubbles in the base of the bowl and another bubble in the metal of the fold of the foot, all dating from manufacture. There are two collector's stickers to the underside of the foot.

English lead glass weighing in at 200 g. (~ 7 oz.).

Provenance: The Graham Slater Collection.

A toastmasters dram glass is a historic drinking vessel featuring a deceptive bowl design with a very thick solid base, which gave the optical illusion of holding a full measure of alcohol while actually containing only a small quantity.

These vessels were typically hand-blown using lead glass, also known as flint glass, which provided clarity, weight, and a resonant ring when struck.

Authentic pieces often exhibit pontil marks on the underside of the foot, surface wear consistent with age, and microscopic air bubbles trapped within the lead metal from the historic manufacturing process.

Display historic glassware within glass-fronted cabinets, on open shelving with adequate backlighting, or arranged thoughtfully on a sideboard to highlight their traditional craftsmanship and silhouettes.

Clean antique glass exclusively by hand using lukewarm water and mild detergent, avoiding harsh abrasives, sudden temperature changes, and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
