Exhibition Quality Pair of Antique Victorian Amboyna and Carved Ebony Pedestals

19th century
Description

Exhibition quality pair of antique Victorian amboyna and carved ebony pedestals having an amboyna top with a crossbanded edge above a frieze drawer and single door opening to reveal a shelf interior above a small drawer all in amboyna with each pedestal having exhibition quality carved ebony figures to the front corners with spectacular carved mounted panels to the cupboard door surrounded by mouldings with fabulous carved mounted panels to the drawer above and below standing on a shaped plinth base.

A showcase pair boasting exceptional quality throughout. Although the maker's mark is not evident they were most certainly crafted by a leading cabinet maker of the period and most likely commissioned pieces. The colour and standard of the carving is just spectacular.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1850s:
Amboyna tops: natural surface oxidisation and gentle darkening built up over time.
Carved ebony caryatid figures and relief panels: High Victorian Renaissance Revival taste.
Sharp architectural mouldings on the canted corners: quality English cabinet making.
Keyholes and door surrounds: subtle surface wear from long domestic use.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This exhibition quality pair of Victorian Renaissance Revival pedestals dates from 1850 and is formed from warm brown amboyna veneer contrasted with black carved ebony and dark metal mounts. Each piece features a shaped rectangular top above a frieze drawer, a central cabinet door opening to reveal a shelf interior, and a lower drawer, all supported on a shaped plinth base with keyhole escutcheons. The front corners are decorated with carved ebony female caryatids, while the cupboard doors and lower drawers display detailed dark relief plaques enclosed by dark wooden mouldings. Measuring 113.5 cm high by 67 cm wide and 49.5 cm deep, these pedestals provide a striking architectural presence. In a contemporary home, this matching pair functions well placed symmetrically in a fireplace alcove as display surfaces or sculptural storage units. The rich grain of the amboyna timber pairs with the dark ebonised details and classical figural carving to create a cohesive period statement. The solid construction and compact footprint allow the cabinets to sit comfortably against a wall while offering practical enclosed storage within living spaces or studies.

Victorian Renaissance Revival furniture features classical architectural motifs, carved caryatids, ebonised details, and figurative relief panels popularised during the mid-to-late nineteenth century.

High-grade pedestals from this era frequently combined figure-grained hardwoods like amboyna or walnut with carved ebony, ebonised mouldings, and cast metal relief plaques.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut joinery, hand-carved wooden details, substantial timber weight, and natural oxidisation across metalwork and lacquered finishes.

Pair pedestals symmetrically within a foyer, alcove, or on either side of a chimneypiece to support sculptures, lamps, or decorative ceramics.

Dust regularly with a dry soft cloth, keep away from direct heat sources to prevent veneer shrinkage, and apply a light coating of natural beeswax polish annually.
