A fine quality pair of antique English Victorian mahogany bedside chests, comprising four drawers each, circa 1860, in excellent condition.  They are pedestals from a Victorian dressing table, which have been adapted into bedside chests.  Each mahogany bedside chest is designed with elegant round moulded cornered tops; this design is also reflected in the plinths. The pair of Victorian bedside tables comprise four graduated drawers to each unit; the top drawers feature the original working brass lever lock & key.  The drawer fronts retain the original turned mahogany knobs and are constructed with top-quality figured mahogany.  The drawer linings and bottoms are constructed with fine hand-dovetailed joints; the drawers close flush to the frame and the Victorian pot cupboards stand on their top-quality rounded mahogany plinths.  The mahogany bedside chests are constructed of top-quality mahogany timber imported from the British colonies, during the earlier part of the early Victorian period. The quality is reflected in the weight of these bedsides; they are heavy to lift.  Ideal for use in the bedroom as bedsides or lamp tables in the living room.

Condition Report:

They are pedestals from a Victorian dressing table, which have been adapted into bedside chests.  The mahogany bedside chests have been cleaned and French polished by hand, to a professional standard, in our workshop.  Therefore, the colour and patination of the mahogany is of an excellent standard.  Nominal old use marks to the leading edges and inside the drawer bottoms, but nothing significant considering the age of the item.   The drawer fronts retain the original turned knobs and the top drawers retain the original working brass lever locks (with key).  The drawers close flush to the frame.  The pair of bedside tables stand on their original top-quality rounded mahogany plinths.  The frames are constructed of top-quality solid mahogany; which displays a superb colour and patination.  The quality is reflected in the weight of these bedsides; they are heavy to lift.  They are solid in joint and ready to use.

During the Victorian era, bedroom furniture evolved to include purpose-built bedside cabinets or lockers designed to house chamber pots and nighttime necessities before modern plumbing became standard.

These pieces were typically constructed from dense hardwoods like solid mahogany or mahogany veneers applied to secondary woods, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawers and turned wooden knobs.

Authenticity is indicated by period-correct joinery such as hand-cut dovetailing, solid timber secondary woods, traditional beeswax finishes, and natural signs of age and wear within the drawer interiors.

They provide a grounding architectural element when paired with clean-lined, modern beds, introducing warmth, historical contrast, and practical bedside storage to a contemporary bedroom scheme.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct heat sources and sunlight, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying a traditional beeswax polish to nourish the wood.
