FAQs

Dating from the 18th century, housekeepers cupboards were utilitarian storage units traditionally used in large country houses to store household linens, foodstuffs, and domestic supplies under lock and key.

These pieces are typically constructed from solid native timber such as oak or elm, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints, pegged frame-and-panel construction, and solid brass hardware.

Authenticity is identified through period construction details, including hand-sawn timber marks, old hand-forged or cast brass fixings, natural patination, and traditional joinery rather than modern fixings.

Position the piece against a neutral wall in a large hallway, dining room, or bedroom to let its architectural presence act as a focal point while providing substantial concealed storage.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and treat it periodically with traditional beeswax to nourish the wood and preserve the natural patina.
