Description

Striking Japanese Meiji (ca. 1900) Koransha porcelain vase decorated with two kirin, signed on the base with the orchid mark of the Fukugawa Koransha company. The bulbous body rising from a spreading foot to a waisted neck with a gilt everted rim, the sides finely painted in underglaze blue with two fierce kirin amid reishi-shaped clouds, with flames enameled in iron-red and heightened with gilt, the clouds heightened with gilt as well, small sections of clouds with gilt and enameled in white, the foot and neck each with a circumferential double circle, the base with the signature Fukagawa and orchid mark of Koransha. Ca. 30cm high x 25cm dia (widest part), weight 2.9kg.

Lovely original condition.

Fukagawa is the family name of the founder and owner of the Koransha company. The combination of the orchid mark of Koransha and signature Fukagawa sei/zo appears to have been used until the company was split in 1889, after which the orchid marks started to appear alone in wares of the Koransha company, such as in this vase.

Date of Manufacture

Antik Dragon Japanese & Other Fine Art has dated this Meiji Porcelain Vase to the 1900s.

The Meiji period (18681912) marked a time of rapid modernisation and increased international trade, during which Japanese ceramic artists combined traditional techniques with innovative artistic expressions to appeal to global markets.

These vessels are typically crafted from high-fired kaolin clay, glazed with feldspathic compounds, and decorated using cobalt blue pigments and overglaze enamel highlights before undergoing a high-temperature kiln firing.

Authentic pieces often feature hand-painted underglaze blue details, distinct studio or maker marks on the base, fine crackle or smooth vitrified glazes, and subtle signs of age such as slight wear on the foot rim.

An antique vase can serve as a striking focal point on a console table, sideboard, or mantelpiece, contrasting cleanly against neutral backgrounds and minimalist contemporary furnishings.

Keep porcelain out of direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading, clean gently with a soft, dry cloth or lukewarm water without harsh detergents, and display on stable surfaces away from high traffic areas.
