Description

A handsome Georgian style 8 day Longcase clock with smart brass dial.

The well proportioned case is solid mahogany and has been well made and is in good condition

The 8 day movement strikes the hours on a bell and has a smart brass dial with subsidiary seconds dial.

It is difficult to date but I would guess at early 20th Cent in the Georgian style.

The case is in good condition and the movement is in working order. However this clock is offered as a trade sale, as is and with no guarantees.

National delivery arranged at cost

Date of Manufacture

Cross Antiques has dated this Mahogany Longcase Grandfather Clock to the 1930s.

Longcase clocks, commonly known as grandfather clocks, originated in the late 17th century following the invention of the anchor escapement. They evolved to house precision pendulum mechanisms securely within a tall wooden case, remaining popular household timepieces throughout the Georgian and Victorian eras.

Traditional longcases are typically constructed from dense cabinet timbers such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, housing brass gear trains driven by lead or iron weights suspended on cords or chains.

Authentic pieces generally feature hand-painted or brass engraved dials bearing maker signatures, traditional joinery within the wooden trunk, and genuine age-related patination on the movement plates and timber surfaces.

Placing a traditional tall clock in a contemporary setting creates a striking focal point by contrasting historical craftsmanship with minimalist architectural lines and neutral colour palettes.

Preservation involves keeping the case away from direct heat sources and sunlight, ensuring the clock is positioned on a level surface, and having the mechanical movement professionally serviced and oiled every few years.
