Japanese Imari porcelain originated in Arita, Saga Prefecture, during the Edo period in the early 17th century. It was named after the port of Imari, from where these distinctive ceramics were shipped to domestic and European markets.

Imari ceramics are crafted from high-fired kaolin clay, traditionally finished with an underglaze cobalt blue and an overglaze iron red, frequently accented with gilt details. The pieces undergo multiple firings to set the complex pigments and metallic accents.

Authentic pieces typically feature hand-painted underglaze blue and overglaze iron red designs, often showing slight asymmetries, firing imperfections, and wear consistent with age. Examination of the foot ring and glaze pooling can also provide clues regarding the period of manufacture.

These decorative vessels can be displayed on mantelpieces, open shelving, or sideboards to introduce rich colour and historical texture. Pairing them with neutral backdrops allows the intricate cobalt and iron-red patterns to stand out as focal points.

Antique ceramics should be cleaned gently using a soft, dry cloth to remove dust, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or submersion in water, particularly if overglaze gilt is present. Keep them out of direct sunlight to prevent fading of the delicate pigments.
