Longcase clocks, commonly known as grandfather clocks, emerged in the late 17th century following the invention of the anchor escapement by Robert Hooke, which allowed for longer pendulums and narrower cases.

Traditionally, these clocks were constructed using solid native timbers such as oak, mahogany, walnut, or pine, often featuring brass dials, lead weights, and steel movements.

Authenticity is typically assessed by inspecting the hand-engraved brass or painted iron dial, the synchronicity of the movement with the case wear, and traditional joinery methods used within the wooden trunk.

Positioning a traditional tall clock in a minimalist or transitional space creates a strong focal point, contrasting clean modern lines with historic warmth and texture.

Maintain the clock in a stable environment away from direct sunlight and heating vents, and have the mechanical movement professionally serviced every three to five years.
