Sold 8 November 2024 · Cross Antiques
This “Geo III Longcase Long Case Grandfather Clock” found a buyer.

It was listed by Cross Antiques. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

A handsome Geo III Longcase clock by Thomas Shindler of Canterbury. He is listed as working there from 1747 to 1797

The case is in nicely figured mahogany and is a good colour. It has a long moulded trunk door and a double plinth base. The arched hood has reeded columns with brass capitals. Both the hood and trunk doors have working locks and keys.

The good quality 8 day movement strikes the hours on a bell. It has a very smart silvered brass dial that is nice and clear and is signed to the arch by the maker.

The case is in good condition but being over 200 years old it does have the odd signs of age and use as shown in the pictures.

The movement is in good working order and keeping good time.

A longcase clock, commonly known as a grandfather clock, is a tall, free-standing, weight-driven pendulum clock enclosed in a wooden case, with styles evolving significantly during the Georgian period from 1714 to 1830.

These clocks were traditionally constructed using solid timbers such as mahogany, oak, walnut, or pine for the case, often featuring brass dial faces, steel movements, and glass panel doors.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-painted or brass engraved dials bearing the makers signature, hand-cut gear wheels in the mechanical movement, and period-appropriate wood joinery and patina.

Placing a traditional longcase clock in a contemporary setting creates a striking focal point, anchoring minimalist rooms with historic texture, organic wood tones, and mechanical interest.

Preservation involves keeping the clock away from direct sunlight and temperature fluctuations, winding it carefully at regular intervals, and having the mechanical movement professionally serviced every few years.
