Tea caddies evolved from locked wooden boxes into ornate individual containers made of metals like silver during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, reflecting the high monetary value of tea at the time.

These items were typically handcrafted from sterling silver using techniques such as silversmithing, casting, chasing, and engraving to produce durable and decorative vessels.

Authenticity is determined by checking for official hallmarks indicating the metal purity, assay office, and year of manufacture, alongside examining hand-finishing marks and natural ageing.

Such pieces can be displayed as decorative tabletop accents on sideboards, mantelpieces, or open shelving to introduce metallic texture and historical character into a contemporary scheme.

Preservation involves regular gentle dusting, minimal use of non-abrasive silver polishes only when necessary, and maintaining stable temperature and humidity conditions away from direct sunlight.
