Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the Victorian era, tea caddies transitioned from secure lockable boxes into ornate display pieces for the dining table as tea became more widely accessible. Silversmiths used techniques such as repousse and chasing to create elaborate decorative hollowware reflecting the owners status.

Victorian tea caddies were frequently constructed from sterling silver, often hallmarked to verify purity. Lids often featured insulated knobs made from ebonized wood, fruitwood, or ivory to prevent heat transmission during handling.

Authentic British sterling silver from this era bears a full set of official hallmarks stamped by an assay office, such as Birmingham or London. These marks include the lion passant for sterling purity, an assay town mark, a makers mark, and a specific date letter code.

A vintage silver tea caddy serves as a sophisticated accent when displayed on a dining room sideboard, tray, or library bookshelf. It can be paired alongside glassware or dark timber furniture to contrast polished metal against natural textures.

Silver pieces should be cleaned using a soft cloth and a specialised silver polish formulated to remove oxidation without stripping detail. Avoid abrasive pads or harsh chemicals that can wear down delicate repousse chasing and official hallmarks.
