Tea caddies served as functional and decorative containers for storing tea, which was a valuable commodity in eighteenth and nineteenth-century Europe. During the Victorian era, silver caddies were produced in elaborate styles, often reflecting historical revivals such as Rococo and Baroque scrollwork.

Most antique British tea caddies were crafted from sterling silver, containing 92.5 percent pure silver alloyed with copper for structural durability. Artisans utilised repousse and chasing techniques to hammer and punch detailed relief motifs, such as cherubs, foliage, and scrollwork, into the metal surface.

Authenticity is verified by official assay office hallmarks stamped onto the piece, which include a purity mark such as the lion passant, a city mark, a date letter, and a sponsor mark. Importers of continental silverware also stamped specific import marks alongside British assay hallmarking.

Antique silver caddies are typically positioned on sideboard surfaces, mantelpieces, or tray displays within a living room or dining area. Their reflective surfaces and relief textures provide visual contrast when paired with ceramics, books, or timber elements.

Silver should be cleaned periodically using a soft cotton cloth and specialised non-abrasive silver polish to remove oxidisation. Avoid washing in dishwashers or using harsh chemical agents, and store the item away from high humidity and sulfur-containing compounds to prevent excessive tarnishing.
