Claret jugs gained immense popularity during the Victorian and Edwardian periods as dedicated vessels for serving red wine, particularly Bordeaux or claret, at formal dining tables.

Traditional claret jugs typically combine hand-cut lead crystal or glass bodies with silver-plated or solid silver mounts, hinges, and handles.

Authentic pieces usually feature maker marks or hallmarks stamped on the silver mounts, alongside period-specific manufacturing techniques such as hand-cut facets on heavy crystal.

An antique claret jug can be displayed on a sideboard, bar cart, or open shelving to introduce classic metallic sheen and reflective glass textures to a contemporary scheme.

Wash the glass gently by hand in warm soapy water using a soft brush, and polish the silver mounts sparingly with a non-abrasive cloth to preserve the plating.
