Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Claret jugs gained popularity during the nineteenth century in Britain to serve red Bordeaux wines, known locally as claret. Designed with glass bodies and metallic mounts, they allowed wine to be decanted and displayed elegantly at formal dining tables.

Antique claret jugs typically combine hand-cut lead crystal or blown glass with silver or electroplated silver mounts. Higher-end examples feature sterling silver fittings with gilded interiors to resist corrosion from wine acidity.

Authentic pieces from this period often display makers electroplate stamps such as EPNS along the collar or rim, alongside hand-cut glass geometry and a weighted, hand-blown base showing minor wear consistent with use.

Place the jug on a wooden sideboard, drinks trolley, or dining table alongside clear glassware to highlight its silhouette and cut-glass motifs.

Hand wash the interior using warm water and mild soap, avoiding harsh chemicals or temperature extremes that could crack the glass. Clean the silver-plated collar gently with a non-abrasive silver polishing cloth to remove tarnish without stripping the plating.
