Description

A Charles II oak duodarn or court cupboard of small proportions, with a frieze carved with foliate designs and ‘JE AE 1670’, which might suggest it was a marriage cupboard. The base has two large doors with lozenge carved upper panels. The top section has two small doors carved with foliate designs and a similarly carved central panel, with a carved frieze above with moulded cornice and a turned finial at each end.

A beautiful and still fully useable duodarn, which is pretty incredible when you consider that it is now over 350 years old. The carving is very nicely executed and it has a lovely rich colour.

Please note that this does not split into two pieces and is very heavy!

Condition: Overall this is in very good condition, but obviously with an item of this age there are a few flaws and areas of wear. I have tried to highlight anything I think is of note in the photos, but the main points are: there is wear/damage (possibly caused either by a cat scratching it, or water damage, it is hard to tell) to the left hand bottom corner, and to a lesser degree on the right hand front corner; the feet are quite worn and the cupboard leans forward a little; there is a slight twist to the structure which isn’t causing any problems, but it does not sit perfectly square; the upper doors are in very good condition with their original hinges but have some later added wooden turn latches to hold the doors shut; the bottom doors show signs of having had larger hinges originally - there are old nail holes and marks on the wood where they would have been - and the bottom left hinge area has various losses to the timber; a lock has been removed from the right hand door; the left hand door secures with a large metal bolt but we have added a catch to the right hand door as it would not stay shut - this could easily be removed if desired; various marks, knocks and small splits throughtout in accordance with age.

Please note that the height varies slightly between 152cm and 154.5cm.

Mainland UK delivery (excluding the Scottish highlands) is included in the price - if you would like a quote for delivery elsewhere, or if you would like to collect the item yourself, please get in touch. Delivery of furniture usually takes between 7 and 21 days from order, though can sometimes take longer. If you need an item by a certain date please speak to us prior to ordering and we’ll try to help.

A duodarn is a traditional Welsh form of two-tiered cupboard dating from the 17th century, typically featuring an enclosed upper stage supported by posts or a base cabinet, used for storing foodstuffs and household textiles.

These pieces were constructed predominantly from solid English oak, utilizing pegged mortise and tenon joinery, hand-riven panels, and frequently decorated with chip-carving, nulled mouldings, and scratch-carved geometric motifs.

Authenticity is assessed through the presence of hand-tool marks, oxidised timber patination, pegged joints without modern hardware, shrinkage cracks consistent with age, and construction methods characteristic of pre-industrial carpentry.

Such substantial timber pieces serve as focal anchor points in contemporary spaces, pairing well with neutral plaster walls, minimalist lighting, and modern abstract art to create a balanced contrast of textures.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources and sunlight, alongside occasional application of traditional beeswax to nourish the dry timber without sealing the pores.
