FAQs

Marble-topped bedside cabinets gained popularity in 19th-century Europe, particularly in France, where marble provided a hygienic and durable surface for holding washbasins, water pitchers, and night-time essentials before indoor plumbing was standard in bedrooms.

These cabinets are traditionally constructed using a solid timber frame, often featuring exotic wood veneers arranged in parquetry or marquetry patterns, topped with a fitted slab of natural marble and supported by slender cabriole legs.

Authenticity can be determined by examining the joinery, such as hand-cut dovetails on the drawer boxes, natural wear patterns on the interior timber, the thickness and cut of the marble slab, and signs of age-related oxidisation on the metal fittings.

These pieces work well as bedside tables in a contemporary bedroom to introduce textural contrast, pairing the cool, polished stone and warm timber tones with minimalist lighting and neutral linens.

The marble top should be sealed periodically and cleaned only with a pH-neutral cleanser to prevent staining from liquids, while the wood surfaces require occasional waxing with a quality beeswax to maintain the finish and prevent drying.
