This Chinese Canton Famille Rose porcelain vase dates from the late 19th century Qing Dynasty. The piece takes a baluster form with a flared neck and foot, incorporating turquoise stylised loop handles on either side of the upper body and ruyi head borders around the rim and shoulder. The exterior displays a pink enamel floral ground overlaid with intricate multi-coloured motifs, while a central gourd-shaped reserve panel depicts painted figures engaged in a scene. The base has a drill hole, and the overall surface shows a glossy glaze finish. Measuring 42 cm high, the vessel stands upright on a flat surface. Positioned on a sideboard top, the vase serves as a decorative display object suited for an English Country House aesthetic. The ceramic construction and colourful enamel detailing bring traditional East Asian craftsmanship into contemporary living spaces as a focal point or mantel accent.

Famille Rose porcelain, known in China as fencai or yangcai, is a category of ceramic art characterised by opaque pink and pastel overglaze enamels. Introduced during the eighteenth century Qing Dynasty under the Reign of Emperor Kangxi, the technique was heavily influenced by European enamel crafts introduced by Jesuit missionaries.

These ceramics were formed from kaolin clay fired at high temperatures to produce white porcelain. Artisans applied vitreous enamels onto the fired glaze and subjected the piece to a second lower-temperature kiln firing to fuse the vibrant pigments, including gold-derived rose hues, to the surface.

Authenticity is evaluated by assessing hand-painted enamel depth, firing imperfections, foot-rim wear, and brushwork precision. Period examples display subtle variation in glaze texture, controlled enamel thickness, and specific calligraphic style marks on the base.

Vessels of this style serve as focal decorative objects when set against neutral backdrops, dark timber furniture, or minimalist shelving. Pairing intricate hand-painted ceramics with modern architectural elements creates visual contrast within classic or eclectic interiors.

Porcelain with overglaze enamelling should be dusted gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or horsehair brush. Chemical detergents, abrasive pads, and prolonged water immersion must be avoided as they degrade sensitive painted enamels and gilding.
