This pair of early 20th century Venetian Rococo style vases is fashioned in the Lacca Povera tradition from wood with a blue and gold finish. Each baluster-shaped vessel displays a vibrant cobalt blue ground embellished with multicoloured floral decoupage prints featuring red, yellow, and brown blooms. The decorative scheme is completed by a scalloped gilded rim at the top, a rounded mid-section moulding, and a flared gilded foot at the base, showing subtle signs of age to the surfaces. Measuring 36 cm high, these decorative vases stand compactly on a mantelpiece to bring a decorative flourish to an interior space.

Lacca Povera, also known as Arte Povera, originated in 18th-century Venice as an accessible alternative to imported Asian lacquerware. Italian artisans cut engraved paper prints, pasted them onto painted timber or papier-mache substrates, and sealed them with translucent varnish layers to simulate eastern lacquer decorative techniques.

Traditional construction involves a prepared wooden or earthen form coated in opaque paint, such as cobalt blue or cream. Hand-coloured copperplate prints are carefully applied to the surface before receiving multiple resin varnish coats, which are cured and polished alongside gilt highlights.

Authentic period examples exhibit micro-crazing throughout the varnish layers, subtle yellowing of the resin, visible paper relief edges beneath the sealant, and signs of authentic copperplate printing techniques. Gilded detailing typically displays light surface oxidisation and wear consistent with age.

These decorative objects function effectively as symmetrical accents atop a fireplace mantelpiece, credenza, or console table. Their contrast of strong background colour and gilding allows them to anchor formal classical schemes or complement eclectic contemporary interiors.

Maintain the surface by dusting lightly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth or feather duster, avoiding water, liquid cleaners, and solvent products. Position pieces away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent cracking, fading, or lifting of the underlying paper motifs.
