Description

Clockwise is delighted to present for your consideration a fine early Victorian English eight day fusee timepiece dial clock.

Finished in lovely oak with the narrow wooden surround typical of its time this is a stunning piece of furniture dating from the 1820-1830 period. The case has a lovely patina and is of a standard pegged design with the surround pegged to the back box. The original cast bezel closes firmly and frames the lovingly restored twelve inch convex dial within the turned surround perfectly; original steel hands finish off the glorious appearance. The maker's name is present - Wilson of Cambridge - who was a watchmaker and jeweller situated at 23 Market Hill in Cambridge. There is both a lower door and side door to the case and the eight day high quality movement, which has tapered shoulders to the plates (again, typical of the late Georgian/early Victorian period), has just been serviced with new line fitted and comes with my three year worldwide guarantee as standard. An original fusee 'butterfly' key accompanies this rare piece.

Clockwise specialises in longcase and bracket clocks and with clients from the world of business, film, sport, royalty and aristocracy - yet more than happy with traditional clients - Clockwise has an unrivalled reputation for excellence and superb service.

Delivery can easily be arranged, please contact me for details.

The Regency period in British clockmaking spans roughly from 1811 to 1820, characterised by a transition from ornate eighteenth-century designs to more restrained, classical forms influenced by the Greek Revival and French Empire styles.

These clocks typically feature solid mahogany or oak cases, curved brass bezels, convex painted dial faces protected by curved glass, and mechanical fusee movements designed to maintain even tension on the gear train as the mainspring unwinds.

Authenticity is determined by examining the hand-painted dial for signs of age and signature styling, inspecting the fusee movement for hand-cut brass wheels and original components, and checking the secondary woods within the case for period-appropriate construction methods.

An antique wall clock serves as a focal point in contemporary spaces when mounted against a plain, neutral wall to highlight its timber frame and classic dial, bridging traditional craftsmanship with modern minimalist design.

Preservation requires avoiding direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity levels to protect the wooden case and painted dial, while professional mechanical servicing every three to five years ensures the fusee movement remains functional.
