This late 19th-century Aesthetic Movement pier display cabinet takes form as a rectangular display case in ebonised wood, burr walnut, and amboyna. The piece employs a black and brown palette combined with marquetry inlay, glazed doors, ormolu brass mounts, and ebonised borders. The double glass-fronted doors house multiple internal shelves with line inlay on their leading edges, backed by old faded velour lining, and stand on small turned bun feet. It measures 111 cm wide, 33 cm deep, and 106 cm high. Suitable for placement in a gentleman's library or study, the cabinet provides enclosed shelving for displaying collections or books. The construction includes a flat top surface, moulded cornices, and decorative ormolu mounts affixed to the vertical stiles. Minor historic knocks, marks, repairs, and treated extinct woodworm holes accompany the structure, complete with a key for the locking doors and pinned supports for adjusting shelf heights.

Originating in the late 19th century, Aesthetic Movement pier cabinets are decorative storage pieces designed to fit the wall space between two large windows. They feature dark ebonised timber, fine wood veneers such as amboyna and burr walnut, and stylized marquetry inlays.

These cabinets commonly feature ebonised hardwood frames paired with contrasting veneers like burr walnut, amboyna, and satinwood. Additional elements include glass door panels, velvet or fabric interior lining, and gilt-bronze or brass mounts.

Authentic pieces display hand-inlaid marquetry rather than printed grain, period-appropriate glass with slight distortions, hand-cast brass mounts, and traditional cabinetmaking techniques such as hand-cut dovetail joints.

A pier cabinet functions well in living rooms, dining rooms, or wide hallways. Its dark ebonised finish provides visual contrast against light background walls, making it ideal for displaying curated collections of ceramics, glassware, or hardback books.

Dust surfaces using a dry microfibre cloth and avoid water-based cleaners. Apply high-grade beeswax sparingly along the grain to preserve the wood veneer, and position the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent cracking.
