This Regency bracket clock is a Georgian-style timepiece constructed from red tortoiseshell and gilt ormolu, measuring 51 cm high, 29 cm wide and 16 cm deep. The arched red tortoiseshell case displays applied ormolu flower trellis fretwork and tortoiseshell mouldings, surmounted by a central urn finial with additional corner finials. Elaborate gilt foliate volutes support the structure above a bombe-shaped base with Rococo scroll feet. The 6-inch break arch dial features a silvered chapter ring with Turkish numerals, a calendar aperture, two subsidiary dials, and finely blued steel hands. Daniel De St Leu signed the centre cartouche and the engraved back plate. Suitable for placement on a mantelpiece or side table in a living room, study or hallway, the clock brings traditional horological detail to a home interior. The mechanism provides an eight-day triple fusee striking movement with an original verge escapement, sounding hours to a bell and quarters to a nest of eight bells, alongside a repeating function.

Developed in the seventeenth century, bracket clocks were original spring-driven timepieces designed to sit on a matching wall bracket or table surface. They represented a major advancement in domestic timekeeping, offering portable, accurate mechanics housed within decorative cases.

These clocks typically combine red or natural tortoiseshell veneers laid over a wooden casing with cast gilt-bronze (ormolu) decorative mounts. Dials were frequently crafted from cast brass with engraved silvered chapter rings and steel hands.

Authentic period clocks feature hand-engraved dial plates, heavy cast brass movements, and original chime mechanisms like quarter-striking trains. Evidence of period construction includes hand-cut dovetails on wooden cases and hand-chased gilding on the ormolu mounts.

A bracket clock acts as a dramatic focal point when placed on a fireplace mantelpiece, marble sideboard, or within a bookshelf arrangement. Pairing rich red veneers and gilded accents with neutral walls balances classical elegance and contemporary warmth.

Dust surfaces gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, keeping the clock away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent the shell veneer from lifting. Mechanical movements should be serviced by a professional horologist every five to seven years.
