This Japanese Imari porcelain lidded vase dates from 1880 and possesses a high-gloss enamel and gold leaf finish. The body features alternating scalloped vertical bands, cobalt blue and iron-red glazes, intricate diaper patterns, and hand-painted floral cartouches depicting exotic blooms on a table alongside mythical dragons. A domed cover with a mushroom-shaped finial sits atop the vessel, while a delicate blue floral border circles the rounded base. In addition, the glazed surface displays subtle surface wear and faint craquelure indicative of age, alongside fine gold leaf highlights. Standing at 53 cm high, this porcelain vessel functions well as an ornamental display piece on a sideboard top within an English country house interior.

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramic wares produced in the Arita region and shipped via the port of Imari, traditionally characterised by underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze iron-red enamels enriched with gilding.

These vessels were hand-thrown using local kaolin clay, fired initially with underglaze cobalt blue decoration, and subsequently hand-painted with iron-red enamels and gold leaf prior to a secondary lower-temperature firing.

Authentic pieces feature visible hand-painted brushwork, subtle structural variations in the porcelain body, deep underglaze cobalt tones, and gentle surface wear on gilded details, alongside unglazed foot rims.

Position the piece as a focal accent on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table, pairing its vibrant palette against neutral backgrounds or incorporating it into a curated display of traditional ceramics.

Dust gently using a dry microfibre cloth or clean with lukewarm water and mild soap, avoiding abrasive sponges, immersion, or chemical cleaners to preserve the delicate overglaze enamels.
